Understand The Tides While Deep Sea Fishing

It can sound weird but a comprehensive knowledge on tides and their effect on your fishing area can actually pay big dividends. In fact, it is considered to be one key to being successful in the realm of deep sea fishing, by the experts. A lot of fishing guides and charter-boat captains know this secret. They even make close studies on currents, tides, and how they would affect fishing on their areas.

The Unknown Secret

However, sad to say, that a lot of informal deep sea anglers actually pay very little attention to such important details. In fact, some anglers don't pay attention at all! And then they would wonder how come the other guy catches all the fish and they don't. Nevertheless, there are still those who realize that somehow tides can affect their fishing. However, they do not know exactly how and why this happens.

These anglers usually waste their precious hours trolling, casting and sinker bouncing even when the tide is not right. However, the deep sea angler who knows his tides could pick in advanced the most favourable fishing periods and concentrate on his efforts during those times. This simply means you can have less of those wasted days and get more fish on your deep sea fishing trips.

Getting Started

You don't have to delve into tide's science here, except to point out that tides are due to the gravitational forces that are brought about the sun and moon. Since the moon is nearer earth, it has greater influence with tides than the sun.

Types Of Tides

Every time the tide is up, water would move towards land, which is also known as "flood tide". On occasions that tides drop, moving its way back to sea, is called "ebb tide". The period in which it doesn't move either way is termed as the "slack tide". It usually takes a period of 6 hours for it to rise, and 6 to get low. For every 24 hours these tides occur 50 minutes later than the last, approximately.

Variations

They also vary in regards to the degrees that they drop or rise. The highest tides occur when the sun and moon are situated on Earth's same side, creating a direct line. Such kind of tide is called "spring tide", which occur during new-moon and full-moon periods.

During these times, both low and high tides are higher than their usual state. However, during the last and first quarter phases of the moon, tides don't fall or rise or fall that much. This is called as "neap tides".

Which Is Which

So which of theses tides are helpful and which are not? To start off, most experts believe that moving tides or currents are most of the time more productive than having no currents or tides. Thus, a "slack" tide would rarely produce good catch.

Using The Tides At The Right Time

You can take advantage of tides even more by knowing when to go. The period in which an incoming tide starts is considered to be one of the productive periods for fishing, especially if you are targeting for gamesters like bluefish, striped bass, channel bass, and weakfish.

During the periods of slack water, the small bait fishes tend to scatter, and having a lack of strong currents they are able to swim faster and escape their predators.

However, when tides start moving, such small bait fishes are at the strong rips and current's mercy. Thus, they are easier to catch and find by stripers and other kinds of game fish. When an outgoing tide starts is yet another good time do fish, simply for the same logic. In general, the popular change of tide, whether it be low or high, is actually the best time to do your fishing.

Costa Rica the Sportfishing Mecca

No matter what your preference, salt water or freshwater, conventional or fly, offshore or river fishing, Costa Rica has a fishing destination for you. Costa Rica is bordered by the Pacific on the West and the Caribbean on the East. There are too many rivers to count flowing in between. If you prefer to fish lakes, there are freshwater lakes of all sizes within the borders and even creating the border with Nicaragua. There are also canals, mangroves, and estuaries, in additional to offshore islands.

This abundance and variety of fishing venues has led to several game fish records being set in the relatively small country. Costa Rica currently holds 89 International Game Fish Association records including a 162 pound blue marlin, and a sailfish caught on the fly.

It is not just the abundance of fish that should make an angler choose Costa Rica, it is also the country’s eye towards game fish conservation. Circle hooks have long been required and the Costa Rican government, working with the Billfish Foundation has recently enacted new rules for both sports fishermen and commercial fishermen aimed at reducing the number of billfish killed as a result of long lining and poor fishing practices.

Whether you want to fish in the Pacific, the Caribbean, both or somewhere in between you will have no trouble finding the perfect fishing lodge or day charter.

The Caribbean coast, is the place for unparalleled world class tarpon fishing. This side of the country can be more remote than the Pacific. Here, you can find all inclusive lodges that include lodging, meals and fishing for tarpon, snook, snapper, and guapote.

Up and down the Pacific coast you will find everything from fishing villages, to beach resort towns, to world class marinas, to middle of nowhere lodges. When choosing to fish in the Pacific you need to do a little research. Although marlin, sailfish, snapper, tuna, dorado, amberjack, wahoo, roosterfish and snook are all common catches, the season for each fish varies depending on your location in Costa Rica.

It is not just the fishing seasons that vary the atmosphere in different locations can be completely different as well. In the north the beaches are popular, the condos are tall, and the wind makes the fishing season a bit shorter than further south. In Herradura, the Marina is world class, you can golf, the fishing is incredible three hundred days a year, but you might miss some of the Costa Rican experience. In Quepos, the fleet is large and experienced, the fishing is great nearly year round, and you can visit Costa Rica’s most popular National Park, Manuel Antonio. Further South on the Osa Peninsula you will find Golfito and Puerto Jimenez. The fishing is great year round depending on the species you are after, the locations are remote and you get to experience the natural beauty of Costa Rica.

Before you come to Costa Rica you need to decide what type of angler and what type of traveler you are. Are you coming for fishing and relaxing or do you want a place with night life? Do you like to feel like you have never left home or do you want to experience Costa Rican life and culture? Do you want luxury or economy? Are you just coming to fish or do you want to participate in other adventure activities? Are you traveling with your family, with your wife, or with a group of guys? Your answer to these questions will effect where you want to fish. What you want to catch and where you want to fish may effect when you want to fish.

Rest assured that you will have a great time fishing in Costa Rica. The fishing is world class due not only to the great number and variety of big fish, but also due to the number of days you can fish per year, the quality of the country’s conservation programs, the quality of the boats to be chartered and the experience and professionalism of the captains and crews.

Merits And Demerits of an Aluminum Fishing Boat

Fishing boat styles and types come in various forms nowadays. Each has its own use and specifications with their own merits. An aluminum fishing boat is one of these. The size of an aluminum fishing boat can be as small as 10 foot but can go up to a huge 24 foot long on some specialized models. The shape of aluminum boats can come in both flat, V shape designs and also in a pontoon style. An aluminum fishing boat can be used as a charter fishing boat when you simply want to rent out a boat for the day or weekend.

Advantages of Aluminum Boats

While there are merits shared by any type of fishing boat out there; the aluminum fishing boat has some advantages all to itself. With the greatest competitor against the aluminum fishing boat being fiberglass boats, the aluminum boat has many thousands of fans because of their advantages:

1. Aluminum fishing boat can be customized and painted to become just about any other kind of boat you desire.

2. Aluminum boats are preferred for most man made lakes, because of their stength that can resist being punctured by underwater trees and other submerged items.

3. Aluminum boats are resistant to rust, decay and drips. Many aluminum fishing boat can be used for decades.

4. It is easy to repair or fix aluminum boats. Most repairs are done with welding or hammering out dings and dents.

5. Aluminum boats are fuel efficient because they are light weight. If you run out of fuel, they are also easier to row than most other types of boat.

6. An aluminum fishing boat can be carried by one person depending on the size of the boat. Most other boats, made from fiberglass need five people just to move it around with more amounts of time and energy.

7. An aluminum fishing boat can be customized by the user to gain the best function from the boat that is wanted by the user.

Disadvantages of Aluminum Boats

While there are many merits of using an aluminum fishing boat, like any kind of things there are also disadvantages as well:

1. An aluminum fishing boat is not good for use on bad weather. Lightning can easily target the boat and people who on it.

2. Aluminum is not good for salt water fishing because the salt is corrosive and will eat away at the rivets. This will eventually cause the aluminum boat to leak or crack.

3. Aluminum fishing boats are not as flexible as fiberglass boats when it comes to shaping and customizing the boat.

4. Aluminum fishing boats are not as sleek on the water as fiberglass boats and tend to plow the water as opposed to pushing it aside. This allows some water to get into the boat from the splash.

5. Aluminum boats do not run as smoothly on water as fiberglass and likely to give riders a funky ride.

6. Aluminum boats can not carry as much fuel as their fiberglass counterpart. Therefore extra fuel cans are needed for any long trips away from shore.

It all depens on your use to make an aluminum fishing boat a better or worse choice. Make your choice wisely.

Fishing in Costa Rica Where to Find the Fish

With over 750 miles of coastline, anglers fishing in Costa Rica have a multitude of options. It’s a big ocean out there much of it void of fishing action. The key to successful offshore fishing is knowing where to find the fish.

There is no replacement for local expertise when it comes to finding fish. Every good captain knows where to find the fish, but you may find the following information helpful when exploring new fishing grounds.

The most important tip for finding fish is Watch for Variation. Variation can come in several forms, some obvious and some more subtle.

Los Corrientes The tried and true method to finding billfish in Costa Rica is fishing in “los corrientes”. These currents can be spotted by a subtle change in color and in temperature. Baitfish and predators are plentiful in these currents. An experienced captain will work the edges of “los corrientes”. When fishing from Quepos, Jaco, or Herradura, captains will find “los corrientes” about twenty-five to thirty miles from shore during peak billfish season.

Oceanfloor Geography Underwater geopgraphic structures such as canyons can increase the flow of ocean currents. The rapidly moving currents can trap bait fish and large game fish move in after the trapped bait. As with the seasonal currents, these currents may be spotted by looking for subtle changes in water color or surface temperature. Of course an experienced Costa Rican offshore fishing guide will have one eye on the bottom (GPS) and one eye on the surface looking for the subtle changes.

Floating Debris The rainy season in Costa Rica is the hottest time of year for dorado, oftentimes bull dorado weighing over fifty pounds. The experienced fisherman knows that fish love structure, even temporary structure resulting from debris washing out to sea from rain swollen rivers. Fishing deep around weed lines, floating pallets, or logs can yield a great dorado run. Other game fish can be found beneath the debris as well.

Underwater Structure Wrecks and reefs provide structure for large bottom fish including Cubera snapper and grouper. The structure is also home to plankton and other small organisms that attract baitfish which in turn attract big game fish looking for a meal. Remember that the main structure may be overfished while potential satellite sites around the structure are teaming with life. Larger gamefish often hang out at these quieter satellite sites.

Slicks Keep you eye out for oily slicks on the waters surface. As big game fish such as dorado, tuna, marlin and sailfish are feeding they chase bait to the surface. Fish oils are released and the slick results. If you have found a bait slick you have found sometime of fish feeding. If you are lucky it will the trophy catch you are looking for.

Birds Offshore birds are always fishing in Costa Rica. They are searching for bait pods, tuna feeding, or trolling billfish. Pay particular attention to the frigate birds especially those that are circling in one location. The experienced fishing guide knows that a lone frigate bird can lead you to a trophy Tuna, Marlin, or Sailfish.

When fishing offshore in Costa Rica, the importance of local expertise can not be overstated. Natural underwater geographic structures are consistent and local Costa Rica Fishing Guides have committed these to GPS and memory giving them the edge when fishing for big game fish in these waters. In addition, an experienced captain and mate will have developed keen eyes. I have seen Captains spot schooling Tuna 3 miles away, just by looking for disturbed water.

Fishing in any weather

Recreation & Leisure
Many men (and probably quite a few ladies) find solace and comfort in fishing. As a leisure activity, fishing is supposed to be infinitely relaxing and beneficial to body and soul regardless of the catch. As a job, fishing can be hard work in hard weather, with reward ever more difficult to come by. But whatever your goal, be it R&R or food on the table, fishing has certain clothing requirements.

Quamut.com carries some valuable advice for fishing in any weather, with cold weather obviously demanding greater care and attention. The most important piece of advice that they offer, whatever the weather, is to choose clothing that is breathable, allows for ease of movement and preferably wicks away moisture, and that is not cotton, as cotton absorbs water and dries slowly.

For cold weather fishing, the suggest that fishermen and women adopt a layered approach to clothing, starting with a thermal base layer and two pairs of thin thermal socks, as opposed to thick bulky socks that could hamper circulation. The second layer should also not be bulky, and while Quamut proposes wool sweaters or fleece pullovers as the layer of choice, allow that any quick-drying, heat-retaining garment will do. Denim jeans are not advised as they get heavy when wet and take a long time to dry, canvas pants are far more practical, especially if they have water-repellent abilities. The outer layer needs to be as waterproof and windproof as possible. Warm hats and gloves are advisable, but gloves should allow freedom of movement, which means that fingerless gloves with fold over mittens are best.

Warm weather fishing requires a completely different approach, with the focus on sun protection. UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) clothing is recommended. As with suntan lotion, the higher the rating, the safer you’ll be. Long-sleeved shirts provide better sun protection, and these days many clothing manufacturers make special fishing shirts that are designed to keep you cool in the heat of the sun. Polyester microfibre shirts are recommended for their breathability and quick-drying features. Shirts with collars are favoured for the protection they provide for necks. Pants should be a breathable, quick-drying cotton/nylon blend.

Both warm and cold weather fishing require footwear that will keep feet reasonably dry and will keep you from slipping on wet surfaces. Sunglasses are also recommended whatever the weather, not only to cut out glare, but to protect our eyes from UVF/UVB damage. Vests, with lots of pockets for bait, lures, spare gut and sandwiches, etc are not quite a necessity, but you can never have to much ‘putting place’ when you’re out fishing, and you never know what you might need.
